Tony Awards: Frances McDormand wins for ‘Good People’

Frances McDormand collected her first Tony for her lead role in David Lindsay-Abaire’s play ‘Good People.’ The other nominees in the category were Nina Arianda, Lily Rabe, Vanessa Redgrave and Hannah Yelland.
McDormand plays Margie Walsh, a south Boston single mother trying desperately to make ends meet. The play, directed by Daniel Sullivan, is produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club at the Samuel Friedman Theatre, and costars Estelle Parsons and Tate Donovan.
Going informal, McDormand wore a jean jacket over her evening gown when she accepted the award on stage. She thanked her family and costars and described the play as an American classic.
McDormand also recalled seeing Greg Allman perform at the Beacon Theatre, where the awards ceremony took place.
Lindsay-Abaire’s last play to reach Broadway, ‘Rabbit Hole’ in 2006, won in the same category for actress Cynthia Nixon.
