REDCAT announces lineup for 2010 NOW festival

It’s time to put on your avant-garde thinking caps.

REDCAT‘s annual New Original Works (NOW) festival, which specializes in the weird, the wacky and the downright unclassifiable, is set to kick off July 22 for a three-weekend run. This year’s lineup includes eight productions that span the disciplines of dance, theater and multimedia art.

For the festival’s first weekend (July 22-24), audiences can experience two new works. ‘The Exile of Petie DeLarge,’ directed by Maureen Huskey, is a theatrical interpretation of the titular text by Jennifer Barclay that tells the story of a leader of a group of renegade students. Also on tap is ‘Tongues Bloody Tongues,’ a musical piece inspired by the history of Iraq from the 30-member collective Killsonic.

The second weekend (July 29-31) brings three works to REDCAT. ‘Ground to Cloud,’ by artist Christine Marie, is an exploration of the history of light, using actors, lighting effects and a sound score. ‘Systems of Us’ features three dancers and five musicians in a piece by choreographer Rae Shao-Lan Blum and composer Tashi Wada. And hip-hop choreographer Raphael Xavier brings ‘Black Canvas,’ a piece that ties together rap music and dance.

The final weekend (Aug. 5-7) features Alexandro Segades’ ‘Replicant VS Separatist,’ a science-fiction tale involving gays; Hana van der Kolk’s ‘Once More, Again, One (Solo),’ a solo dance piece that uses the music of the Pointer Sisters, Prince and the Rapture; and Miwa Matreyek‘s ‘Myth and Infrastructure,’ a new cinematic work that incorporates live performance.

Individual program tickets cost $18, but you can see all three programs for $36.
