Pete Wilson endorses in area congressional race

Former Gov. Pete Wilson has endorsed former Rep. Steven T. Kuykendall as the Republican businessman seeks to return to Congress from the newly drawn 47^th District seat in Long Beach. Former Long Beach Mayor Eunice Sato also has endorsed Kuykendall, his campaign announced this week.

Developments in other area congressional races include those in the San Fernando Valley’s new 30^th District, where veteran Democratic Reps. Brad Sherman and Howard Berman are competing in what is expected to be a hard-fought and costly race. This week Sherman scored backing from former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe, as well as from an additional labor group, Ironworkers, Local 433.

In another intraparty fight, this one a three-way battle among Democrats, Rep. Janice Hahn of San Pedro announced endorsements from four more unions: Los Angeles Port Police, California School Employees Assn., American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and its legislative arm and Heat & Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers, Local 5. Hahn is seeking reelection from the newly drawn 44^th District and is facing competition from Rep. Laura Richardson (D-Long Beach) and Assemblyman Isadore Hall (D-Compton).

In the newly, open 41^st District in Riverside County, Democrat Mark Takano announced backing from several unions, including the American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees, the Communications Workers of America Southern California Council and the International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers, Local 4. Takano, a Riverside Community College District trustee, faces competition from Riverside County Supervisor John Tavaglione, a Republican.

Perennial Democratic candidate Mervin Evans has announced he’s running again, this time for the Los Angeles area’s 37^th District seat held by Democratic Rep. Karen Bass. No other candidates have announced for this seat.
