As Grant rolled to a 19-2 record last season, losing only to Taft and Long Beach Poly in the playoffs, everyone mentally congratulated the Lancers for playing over their heads. This season, many expected Grant to fall back to the kind of 15-11 team they were in 2005-06.
Surprise. The Lancers are 10-4, going into Friday’s game against Birmingham. Among their victories are impressive wins over Cresenta Valley and Reseda. Only one of their four losses -- a 62-34 thumping by Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Nov. 30 -- was by double digits.
All this with an eight-player roster and no player taller than 5-8.
‘We know people thought last year was a fluke,’ Grant Coach Michael Flot said. ‘But we really try to teach the game -- you can’t underestimate the value of teaching. And this may be the hardest-working group I’ve ever had. I can’t work them hard enough.’
