Court Upholds Lavelle Conviction in Superfund Case

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court today upheld the conviction of Rita Lavelle, former head of the Reagan Administration’s embattled “superfund” toxic waste cleanup program.
Lavelle was convicted Dec. 1, 1983, of perjury and obstruction of justice in her administration of the Environmental Protection Agency cleanup program and sentenced to six months in prison and a $10,000 fine.
The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia voted 2 to 0 to affirm the conviction.
Lavelle was convicted of perjury, obstructing a congressional investigation and filing a false sworn statement.
