Equal Funds for Women Athletes

It was a pleasure to read Dick Wagner’s article (Young Players Pace All-Southeast Girls Basketball Squad, April 4) in the Southeast sports pages. The photos, illustrations and format superbly set off the story about female athletes in our area who are being honored by The Times this week.
As a member of the Women’s Sports Foundation, I am aware of the great advances girls are making in the sports arena. However, I also realize that for these strides to continue we must be extremely vigilant that Title IX, which funds school athletic programs equally for girls and boys, is not eroded as was begun last year when the U.S. Supreme Court narrowed its interpretation of this law.
In order to help young women get a leg up on the opportunities available to them in their chosen sport, the foundation each year in its January publication, Women’s Sports and Fitness, lists colleges and universities offering scholarships. Reprints for those who may have missed this information are available for a $2 postage and handling fee. Requests for the 1985 Women’s Sports Foundation Scholarship Guide may be made by contacting the Women’s Sports Foundation, 195 Moulton St., San Francisco, Calif., 94123.
