WASHINGTON — The Republican-controlled Senate today held firm on its vote to let the CIA ship $38 million in non-lethal aid to contras fighting Nicaragua’s leftist government, even rejecting a Democratic proposal to require the United States to abide by international law.
After a 55-42 vote for the aid Thursday, the Senate today rejected a Democratic attempt to bar the CIA from distributing it and also defeated an amendment demanding that the funds not be used to “place the U.S. in violation” of international law.
