Father of Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese

A funeral service was held Monday in Piedmont for Edwin Meese Jr., a veteran Alameda County civic official and the father of U.S. Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III.
Meese, 88, died Friday in an Oakland-area hospital after a long battle with liver cancer, said Myron Meese, one of four surviving sons.
In Alameda County, flags were lowered to half-staff at all administrative buildings, said Bill Mehrwein, clerk for the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. Meese had served six terms as the county’s treasurer-tax collector before retiring in 1971.
