The city of Duarte has purchased 11 acres of land from the federal government to be used as a park. The property, about three-quarters of a mile north of Huntington Drive on the west side of Encanto Parkway, was under the responsibility of the Army Corps of Engineers but was never used.
The rocky lot, which is crossed by a storm drain, was purchased for $64,000. The cost of developing it into an eight-acre park, including the purchase price, is expected to be about $250,000. Development will include clearing the rocks and leveling the lot, planting grass and installing picnic tables and other park equipment.
