Compton Educator Gets Cleveland Post

CLEVELAND — Ronald A. Boyd, deputy superintendent of the Compton schools, was selected Tuesday to head the Cleveland public schools. The $80,000-a-year post had been vacant since the suicide of its superintendent in January.
The school board voted 7 to 0 to hire Boyd to head the 76,000-student system, the largest in Ohio, spokesman John Hairston said.
“I’m just elated and just so happy and ecstatic,” said Boyd, 44, when reached at his office at the Compton Unified School District.
Cleveland has been without a permanent superintendent since the Jan. 26 suicide of Frederick Holliday, 58, the district’s first black superintendent. In a suicide note, Holliday said he was sickened by petty politics of the school board.
Boyd, who is black, was one of four finalists for the job. He received the highest ranking from a citizen screening committee.
