Irvine : Medal of Honor Heroes Pick City for Convention

The Medal of Honor Society, consisting of servicemen who have won the nation’s top award for gallantry, will meet in Irvine in 1987 for its biennial convention, the chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors announced Tuesday.

Thomas F. Riley, a retired brigadier general in the U.S. Marine Corps, said there are currently 240 holders of the Medal of Honor. He said he expects about 500 people to attend the weeklong meeting in November of 1987.

Riley said Orange County veterans’ organizations approached him about a year ago to suggest that the county bid to host the convention.

He said he was happy to do so because “I’m a hero worshiper” and “I really have a great admiration” for the winners of the medal.
