The Marina High School defensive secondary, which returns three starters from last year’s 8-5 team, will be tested tonight when the Vikings open their 1985 football season against pass-happy St. Louis High of Oahu in Kaiser High School Stadium at Honolulu.
The Warriors, defending Interscholastic League of Honolulu champions and the No. 1-ranked team in the state, return two quarterbacks, who alternate on each play, from a 9-3 team.
Marina will have an new backfield of quarterback Rick Vanderriet, running back Mike Stafford and tailback Billy Dunn, a transfer from Chicago. Quarterback Steve Blokdyk (1,000 yards passing) and running backs Sean Massey (1,200 yards) and Adam Antoyan (1,000 yards) helped lead Marina to the 1984 Southern Section Big Five Conference semifinals.
Marina should be able to control the line of scrimmage tonight with returning offensive guards John Porter (5-9, 230) and Rick Hunt (6-3, 260), tackle Pat Brown (6-0, 215) and tight end Preston Hayslette (6-1, 210). St. Louis has just four players who weigh more than 200 pounds.
