Chess Match Adjourned

MOSCOW — The ninth game of the world chess championship between titlist Anatoly Karpov and Gary Kasparov was adjourned at the 42nd move Thursday, with grandmasters uncertain over which player held the advantage.

The game, in which Kasparov is playing white, is scheduled to resume tonight.

Karpov leads the series in points, 4 1/2 to 3 1/2.

Match rules award one point for a victory and half a point to each player for a draw. The first player to win six games or 12 1/2 points will claim the world chess title. Karpov would retain his championship if the 24-game series ended in a tie.
