EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Skip Trial held off a closing rush by favored Stephan’s Odyssey and won the $333,400 Pegasus by a neck at the Meadowlands Thursday night.
Skip Trial covered the 1 1/8 miles of the Grade II stakes for 3-year-olds in 1:51 on the sloppy track that was drenched by daylong rain. Given a perfect ride by jockey Jean Luc Samyn, the son of Bailjumper paid $6.20 to win backers and earned $200,000 for owner Mrs. Ben Cohen.
It was the sixth victory in 11 starts for the Sonny Hine-trained colt.
Stephan’s Odyssey, ridden by Laffit Pincay, trailed by as many as seven lengths at the half-mile pole but just missed catching the winner on the outside. “I thought I had him,” Pincay said. “I just ran out of race track at the end.”
