College Basketball Roundup : Manning Leads Kansas Past Kentucky, 83-66

Danny Manning scored 22 points, and Ron Kellogg added 17 as seventh-ranked Kansas defeated ninth-ranked Kentucky, 83-66, Saturday night at Lawrence, Kan.

Kenny Walker, Kentucky’s 6-8 senior forward, left the game early in the second half when he caught an elbow in his left eye. Walker did not re-enter the game but said the small scratch under the eye was not serious.

“I didn’t go back in because if they had thrown the ball at me, I would have seen two coming,” Walker said. “I had double vision.”

Kansas is 8-1. Kentucky is 5-1.

It was Kansas’ first victory over Kentucky since 1973 and only the second Jayhawk victory over the Wildcats in an 18-game series.

Oklahoma 93, Texas 92--Tim McCalister sank two free throws with one second left as ninth-ranked Oklahoma (8-0) won in overtime at Norman, Okla.

Texas’ Patrick Fairs, who finished with 29 points, hit a 25-foot jumper at the buzzer to tie the game, 81-81, at the end of regulation. John Brownlee scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Longhorns (3-3).

Oklahoma (8-0) was led by McCalister and Darryl Kennedy with 18 points each.

Arkansas 79, Ohio State 70--William Mills made a free throw after time had expired to send the game into overtime and then accounted for five more points as Arkansas (6-1) beat 20th-ranked Ohio State (5-1) at Pine Bluff, Ark.

The 6-foot-7 Mills made 9 of 11 from the field in the first half and finished with 28 points and 12 rebounds.

The Buckeyes led, 64-55, with 1:43 left, before Arkansas came back to tie it, 64-64, as Mills’ free throw hit the rim and bounced in.

Ohio State’s Brad Sellers, who had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocked shots, fouled out with 34 seconds left in regulation. His absence cost the Buckeyes in overtime.

Indiana 74, Texas Tech 59--Daryl Thomas scored a career-high 29 points, and Steve Alford, held scoreless in the first half, hit five straight baskets early in the second half as 18th-ranked Indiana (5-1) pulled away at Bloomington, Ind., in the championship game of the Indiana tournament. Texas Tech fell to 4-4.

N. Carolina 99, Ohio U. 57--Senior Brad Daugherty scored 17 points as top-ranked North Carolina (7-0) overcame a sluggish start to defeat Ohio University (5-2) at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Washington State 80, E. Washington 71--Center Ken Mathia scored a career-high 22 points and forward Joe Wallace added 20 at Pullman, Wash., as the Cougars (5-4) snapped a three-game losing streak.

Mathia, a 7-foot junior, hit 9 of 11 field goals. Roosevelt Brown scored 15 points for Eastern (6-4), which had not played Washington State since 1959.

Arizona 70, New Mexico 55--Sean Elliott scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half as Arizona (5-3) beat New Mexico (5-1) at Tucson. The Lobos’ Johnny Brown scored 17.

Nevada Las Vegas 74, Nevada Reno 52--Junior forward Armon Gilliam scored 16 points to lead 13th-ranked Nevada Las Vegas (6-1) at Reno. The Wolf Pack is 1-6.

Weber St. 108, Utah St. 76--Curtis Webster scored 21 points at Ogden, Utah, as Weber State (8-0) won by the largest margin in the 25-year history of games between the in-state rivals.

Georgetown 86, Florida A&M; 56--Reggie Williams led a balanced attack with 16 points and 11 rebounds as fifth-ranked Georgetown won at Landover, Md. Michael Jackson and David Wingate each scored 14 points for Georgetown (6-0). The Rattlers fell to 2-7.

Memphis St. 119, S. Carolina St. 73--Senior point guard Andre Turner scored 20 points and forward Baskerville Holmes added 15 as 12th-ranked Memphis State (7-0) won at Memphis. South Carolina State is 3-3.

Michigan 74, Western Michigan 54--Gary Grant scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half as No. 2-ranked Michigan broke open a close game at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Roy Tarpley led Michigan (9-0) with 19 points. Western Michigan is 5-4.

Minnesota 62, Colorado St. 59--Mitch Lee scored 18 points as Minnesota (8-1) won at Minneapolis. Rich Strong scored 22 for Colorado State (4-4).

Virginia Tech 59, Va. Commonwealth 57--George Caesar’s layup with 3:31 to play capped a rally that gave Virginia Tech its first lead of the game, and the Hokies (7-1) went on to defeat Virginia Commonwealth (1-4) at Richmond, Va.

Tennessee 67, Missouri 54--Guard Tony White scored 22 points and center Rob Jones added 14 as Tennessee (4-1) won at Knoxville. Missouri is 6-3.

Illinois 102, Houston 92--Center Ken Norman scored 24 points to lead 10th-ranked Illinois (6-2) to victory at Champaign, Ill., for the 29th straight time. Alvin Franklin scored 26 points for Houston (3-3).

Syracuse 102, Brooklyn 61--Sparked by 15 points apiece from freshman guard Sherman Douglas and senior Rafael Addison, No. 4-ranked Syracuse (6-0) routed Brooklyn College (2-5) at Syracuse, N.Y.

Iowa State 82, Michigan State 80--Iowa State’s Jeff Hornacek fed freshman Elmer Robinson for a layup with two seconds left in overtime to give the Cyclones a victory at Ames, Iowa.

Ron Virgil led Iowa State with a career-high 22 points. Hornacek finished with 20. Both teams are 6-1.

Miami (Ohio) 80, Xavier 74--Senior forward Ron Harper matched his season-high with 36 points to lead Miami of Ohio (5-1) over Xavier (5-1) at Oxford, Ohio.

Temple 81, Villanova 73--Eddie Coe scored a career-high 29 points as Temple (5-1) won at Philadelphia. Coe, a 6-foot-3-inch senior, sank 13 of 14 free throws and had 12 rebounds. Harold Pressley scored 26 points for Villanova (6-3).

W. Virginia 74, Pittsburgh 63--Renardo Brown scored 18 points and Dale Blaney added 17 as West Virginia (4-4) beat Pittsburgh (5-2) at Morgantown, W.Va.

Louisville 73, W. Kentucky 70--Forward Herbert Crook scored 20 points and Milt Wagner hit four free throws in the final 11 seconds as No. 15-ranked Louisville (5-2) came from behind to defeat Western Kentucky (8-1) at Louisville.

LSU 87, Hardin-Simmons 71--Sophomore forward John Williams scored 26 to lead No. 11-ranked Louisiana State (7-0) at Baton Rouge, La. Hardin-Simmons (6-3) was paced by senior center Craig Sladek, who had 22 points.

Texas A&M; 81, Oral Roberts 75--Senior guard Don Marbury scored 32 points to lead Texas A&M; (5-3) over Oral Roberts (3-4) at Tulsa, Okla.

Oregon St. 77, Santa Clara 62--Tyrone Miller scored 18 points as the Beavers (2-3) won at Corvallis, Ore. The Broncos (2-5) were led by Steve Kenilvort, who scored 23 points.
