WASHINGTON — The Agriculture Department said Friday that payments to entice some dairy farmers to get out of the business would be exempt from cuts under the Gramm-Rudman deficit-cutting law.
The department said those payments would not be subject to 4.3% cuts that are to be taken from other farm subsidies this fiscal year under the law. Dairy payments would be exempt from cuts in future years as well.
