Anchored by Olympic champion Michael Gross, a West German relay team set a short-course world record of 7:05.17 in the 800-meters freestyle at an international swim meet at Bonn, West Germany.
Rainer Henkel, Alexander Schowtka, Dirk Korthals and Gross shaved more than eight seconds off the time of 7:13.99 set by an East German team Jan. 5, 1985. Igor Poljanski of the Soviet Union set a world record with a time of 1:56.73 in the 200-meter backstroke.
Gross won two other events Sunday, the 50-meter butterfly in 24.60 and the 100-meter butterfly in 53.43. Olympic champion Alex Baumann of Canada took the 200-meter individual medley in 1:59.03.
