La Mirada : Railroad to Repair Crossing
Santa Fe Railway has agreed to repair one of its crossings on Alondra Boulevard just east of Valley View Avenue in La Mirada. It is one of 21 rail crossings that the City Council contends are in disrepair and pose a safety threat.
But Santa Fe has agreed only to patch the crossing with asphalt and wood planks, not install rubberized pads, which the city wants. Work is to begin later this month and will take about two weeks to complete.
The decision by Santa Fe to repair the Alondra Boulevard crossing is the first break in the stalemate between the city and the railroads over the repair of crossings.
City officials want both Santa Fe Railway and Southern Pacific Railroad, which also has routes in La Mirada, to install rubberized pads at the crossings to smooth the ride for motorists. The railroads are willing if the city pays for the pads and installation.
