Southern Section Soccer Playoffs : Boveta’s Free Kick Lifts Foothill Over Mater Dei, 2-1

John Boveta’s goal on a free kick with 14 minutes left broke a 1-1 tie and gave Foothill a 2-1 victory over Mater Dei in a first round CIF Southern Section 4-A boys’ soccer playoff game Thursday afternoon at Foothill.
Foothill, the Century League and defending 4-A champion, took a 1-0 lead two minutes before the half on a goal by sophomore forward Paul Thornton. The Monarchs, the Angelus League’s second-place team, then tied it in the second half on a goal by Sammy George.
In other 4-A action:
Edison 4, Paramount 0--Junior halfback Mike Weiss had three goals to lead the Sunset League champion Chargers to a shutout at home. Junior Tom Patton also scored for Edison (15-4-3).
Torrance 1, El Modena 0--Tim Fitzgerald’s goal in the second 10-minute overtime broke the scoreless tie at Torrance and eliminated the Vanguards (11-5-4).
Santa Ana 2, Ocean View 1--The Saints, the Century League’s second-place team, beat the Seahawks, the second-place team from the Sunset League, on goals by junior forward Jose Vasquez and senior sweeper Frank Reya.
In 2-A action:
Brea-Olinda 4, Burroughs 2-- Ulysses Huang and Mike Oziminske had first-half goals and John Wells and Jeff Gordon scored in the second half to lead the host Wildcats, the top-seeded team in 2-A. Brea-Olinda (13-2-4) will play Sunny Hills.
La Quinta 2, Estancia 1--Senior center John Sanchez and senior forward Dan Quiggins each scored second-half goals to lead the Aztecs (13-8-1) past the Eagles (13-7-4) at home.
Sunny Hills 4 Los Amigos 0--The Lancers (14-3-1) advanced to play Brea-Olinda Tuesday. Jerry Sackler scored 20 minutes into the first half. Abid Chaudhry, Morgan Brown, and Rafael Gomila scored in the second half.
Western 1, St. Bernard 0--The Pioneers (8-10-3), the No. 3 entry from the Orange League, defeated the Vikings.
Saddleback 6, John Glenn 2--The Roadrunners (12-5-2) ran past the Eagles (9-5-5).
In girls’ 3-A action:
La Quinta 1, Rosary 0--Junior center-forward Kristan Harkins scored off a corner kick 20 minutes into the first half to give the Aztecs (19-5-2) the victory at home. La Quinta, the defending 3-A champion, is the top-ranked team in the division.
El Modena 2, Millikan 1--The Vanguards (11-5-7) rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to upset the Moore League champions at Millikan. Sophomore midfielders Shannon Terry and Leslie Moyer each scored goals. The Vanguards, the No. 3 entry from the Century League, play La Quinta at home Tuesday.
Villa Park 4, Corona 2--Shannon Dennis scored three goals and Kristi Pointer added another as Villa Park won at home. The Spartans play Simi Valley Tuesday.
Esperanza 6, Foothill 1--Dawn Nystol, Gina Pachiano and Maria Delatorre had first-half goals to lead the Aztecs (13-5-2) over the Knights at Tustin High. Leasa Bosley, Lisa Bowers and Colleen Gamblan also scored for Esperanza.
Long Beach Wilson 4, Valencia 2--Rayanne Wells and Debbie LaPorte scored for host Wilson to help eliminate Valencia (11-9-1), the Orange League’s second-place team.
Simi Valley 4, Troy 2--Host Simi Valley, the seventh-ranked team in 3-A and the No. 2 team in the Marmonte League, ran past the Warriors.
