The defense rested in the espionage trial in Alexandria, Va., of former Army intelligence officer Richard Craig Smith after he testified that he had passed information about six U.S. counterspy operations to a Soviet KGB officer in Tokyo but did so as part of a mission for the CIA. He insisted that he had been a spy for the United States but that he had never been a spy for the Soviet Union. Smith is charged with two counts of espionage, one of conspiracy and two counts of passing secrets to the Soviet Union.
