Senate Panel Rejects Nominee for Belize Post

WASHINGTON — The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday rejected the nomination of James Malone as ambassador to Belize after testimony that his performance had been “less than satisfactory” in other posts. The vote was 9 to 7.
Sen. Edward Zorinsky (D-Neb.) led opposition to the nomination, charging that Malone had performed poorly as assistant secretary of state for international and environmental affairs and as U.S. representative to the Law of the Sea Conference. Malone is a conservative protege of Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.), who defended the nomination President Reagan made Dec. 13.
