BOGGLED IN BOND

Will the identity of the next James Bond be revealed at the Cannes Film Festival?
That’s the buzz--but a spokesman for United Artists wouldn’t confirm or deny: “If they have him by then (Cannes kicks off May 8), it sure would be a great place to make the announcement, wouldn’t it?”
Said to be among the contenders: Mel Gibson. His rep at first denied it with “I haven’t heard a word about this,” which he then amended to “I’m really not at liberty to speak about it.”
Producer Cubby Broccoli wouldn’t talk--but several publicists helped us come up with a list of Bondian candidates. (Quipped one: “Practically anybody with an English accent is up for the job.”)
Along with Gibson, those most often mentioned as contenders include Simon MacCorkindale, Pierce Brosnan and Bryan Brown. “And don’t forget (“The Colbys’ ”) John James,” added a Broccoli associate. “We get lots of calls asking if he’s the one.”
