Airline Canceling Cairo-Athens-Rome Route Hit by Terror

NEW YORK — TWA is canceling flights on the Cairo-to-Athens-to-Rome route that was struck by terrorists two weeks ago, a spokeswoman for the airline said today.
Sally McElwreath cited “very poor bookings” for the decision to cancel the flights, which have not operated since the April 2 bombing that blew a hole in a Boeing 727 and killed four Americans aboard.
She said that she assumed that fear of terrorism was a factor in the low bookings, but that a weaker dollar and low domestic fares also are probably keeping more vacationers in the United States.
She said TWA is continuing to operate transatlantic flights to Rome and to Athens, and flights from northern Europe to Cairo. Discontinuance of the local route was “an economic decision,” she said.
