Countywide : Gates Wins Support of Deputy Sheriffs’ Group

For the first time in the organization’s history, the Assn. of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs’ Political Action Committee has endorsed Sheriff Brad Gates for reelection.
Association general manager Robert J. MacLeod said the group’s political committee voted to support Gates after interviewing him and his two opponents, Sheriff’s Sgt. Linda Lea Calligan and Municipal Judge Bobby D. Youngblood. The association represents 750 sheriff’s deputies, district attorney investigators, deputy marshals and retired peace officers.
Gates unsuccessfully sought the group’s endorsement in 1978, when the association supported Sgt. Lauren Rusk, whom Gates defeated handily. Gates did not seek the group’s endorsement in 1982, MacLeod said. The association did not exist in 1974 when Gates was elected to his first four-year term.
