Spain’s Socialist government said it will hold general elections June 22, five months ahead of schedule, in an apparent attempt to capitalize on the public’s recent referendum endorsement of continued Spanish membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Political analysts noted that the Socialists of Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez, who fought for Nato membership, have been slipping in recent opinion polls and may be seeking to prevent any further erosion of their position.
