Suspension of Doonesbury Strips

The Times refused to run “Doonesbury” during the week of April 14 on the ground that it was unfair to people who could not defend themselves.
That action was laudable in its intent.
The lifted Doonesbury strips proved to be a litany of the names of some 42 Reagan appointees in a “sleaze grab bag” of “just the guys who got caught” at mostly unspecified activities disapproved by G. B. Trudeau and aficionados.
By suppressing the series, The Times gave it more importance than it merited. And denied readers the opportunity to see how capricious the commentary really was. And sleazy.
