College Baseball : Belanger (13 Strikeouts) Helps Titans Past San Jose St.

Senior left-hander Mike Belanger pitched a complete game four-hitter and had 13 strikeouts Friday night to lead Cal State Fullerton past San Jose State, 7-1, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. baseball game in San Jose.

Belanger (7-2) gave up a run in the first inning to snap his scoreless inning streak at 25. He has allowed one run in his last 34 innings.

Fullerton (7-6 in conference and 30-17 overall) tied the the score, 1-1, on a squeeze by Jef Garcia in the third.

The Titans scored five times in the fifth to take the lead. The key hit in the rally was a three-run triple by catcher John Eccles. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases, Garcia singled to put Fullerton ahead, 2-1. Eccles followed with a triple off the the fence in center field.

Dann Howitt hit a bases-empty home run in the eighth for Fullerton. It was Howitt’s fifth homer of the year.

Anthony Telford had 11 strikeouts for the Spartans (4-9, 16-26).

In other Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. action:

UC Irvine 5, Pacific 2--Anteater sophomore right-hander Craig Brink completed his fourth game of the season and struck out seven at Irvine. Second baseman Ed Clark had three hits and right fielder Tom Baine drove in two runs.

UCI (5-8, 16-21-2) plays host to the Tigers (4-9, 19-21) again today at 1.

In nonconference college action:

Cypress 11, Cal Poly Pomona JV 6--Mark Mohler hit home runs in back-to-back at-bats for the Chargers (24-11) at Cypress. The sophomore from St. John Bosco High School hit his first homer in the third with a man on and hit another in the fourth with two on. David Wooley (2-1) picked up the win. Bob Long was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and teammate Ed Evans went 3 for 4 with one RBI for the Chargers.
