The International Olympic Committee expanded restrictions on drug abuse by Olympic athletes, including a lower limit on caffeine and a total ban on diuretics.
The maximum caffeine content in athletes’ blood samples was set at 12 micrograms per milliliter. Diuretics, which reduce the body’s water content and are widely used in weight-reducing and heart medicine, were proclaimed a “prohibited substance.”
