A Lebanese woman was killed by machine-gun fire and a Frenchman in a car with her was wounded when she tried to turn back from a militia checkpoint in Muslim West Beirut. Police said that Soha Toukan, 30, a teacher at the American University of Beirut, apparently feared that the Frenchman would be kidnaped. The militiamen, who were unidentified, became suspicious and opened fire when she turned around. Her companion, Richard Robert, 37, a teacher at a French secondary school in West Beirut, was later reported in good condition in an East Beirut hospital. Robert is one of 16 French nationals who have remained in Beirut despite an exodus of Westerners.
