Libyan nationals should be restricted in their U.S. travel, the same as Soviet officials are, said Rep. Bobbi Fiedler (R-Northridge), a candidate for the U.S. Senate. Moreover, Fiedler said, Libyans here should have to report their whereabouts and activities to U.S. immigration authorities monthly. Fiedler said 3,080 non-immigrant Libyans now reside in the U.S., including 1,200 students, 700 of whom are on Libyan government scholarships. “They are a potential terrorist army within our borders that must be monitored,” Fiedler said. Presently, Libyan diplomats assigned to the United Nations cannot leave New York City, but other Libyans travel without restriction, according to the State Department. Soviets, on the other hand, cannot travel in many regions of the U.S., including vast expanses of Southern California, on grounds of national security.
