Rancho Santiago Catcher MVP in Softball

Rancho Santiago College sophomore catcher Laura Janzen has been voted the Most Valuable Player of the South Coast Conference by the conference softball coaches.

Janzen, who attended Villa Park High School, hit .306 overall and .333 in conference play for Rancho Santiago (13-1, 35-5). The defending state champion Dons won their first SCC title this season.

Rancho Santiago sophomore Kim Martin was voted the conference’s top pitcher. Martin, who attended Westminster High, was 20-2 overall and 10-1 in conference with a 0.18 earned-run average.

Freshman first baseman Sandy Martinez of Rancho Santiago also was voted to the first team.

Other first-team members include: pitcher Annette Gonzales of Fullerton and catchers Joelle Wilkerson of Cypress and Gail Russell of Golden West.

The first-team infielders are Carla Williams of Fullerton, Regina Marchionni of Golden West, and Kerri Nakamaru and Karen Zupan of Cypress.

Kim Moudy of Cypress, Kelli Winkler of Golden West, and Chris Sison and Barbara Platis of Fullerton were named first-team outfielders.
