Southern Section 4-A Boys Tennis : Corona del Mar Beats Palos Verdes

Corona del Mar High School, the third-place representative from the Sea View League, upset No. 3-seeded Palos Verdes Friday, 10-8, in a boys’ Southern Section 4-A tennis match at the Balboa Racquet Club.
Defending Southern Section individual champion Mike Briggs swept his three sets. Corona del Mar (16-6) plays University in a quarterfinal match on Tuesday.
In other 4-A action:
University 16, Thousand Oaks 2--Junior Carsten Hoffman won all three of his matches to lead the host Trojans (16-5-1).
Laguna Beach 13, Harvard 5--The Artists’ top two singles players and top two doubles teams all went undefeated in the win.
Edison 16, Villa Park 2--The Chargers advanced to the quarterfinal round.
In 3-A playoff action:
Mater Dei 11, Burbank 7--Dax Peterson swept three matches to lead the Monarchs. Mater Dei plays Capistrano Valley Tuesday in a quarterfinal match.
Mission Viejo 10, Corona 8--Gary Pearne (54-0) led the Diablos.
Capistrano Valley 15, Sonora 3--The Cougars lost just two singles and one doubles match in beating the Raiders at Sonora. Steve Sprinkle, playing No. 3 singles, upset Sonora’s top player, Benson Curb, 6-2.
