After a police stakeout, a young man was arrested by Santa Ana police for allegedly extorting $5,000 in “protection” money from a Vietnamese restaurant owner by threatening to kill the owner and his family.
Santa Ana Police Sgt. John McClain said Dann Cong Nguyen, 25, address unknown, was booked into Orange County Jail late Monday) in lieu of $10,000 bail.
“There is no indication that the suspect is a member of any gang,” but his background is still being checked out, McClain said.
Police said the apparent extortion plot began May 12 when the suspect allegedly contacted the restaurant owner and demanded $10,000. Several nights later the suspect allegedly agreed to accept $5,000 and was arrested when he showed up to collect the money.
Police said they are not identifying the restaurant or its owner in order to protect the owner and his family.
