Mexican authorities, stunned by the scale of violence that exploded after Mexico’s 2-1 victory over Belgium in a World Cup match, have taken special security steps to prevent a repeat incident.
Extra police have been detailed to patrol the square around the independence monument on Mexico City’s Paseo de la Reforma Avenue, where rival gangs fought with broken bottles, knives and chains as almost 100,000 people celebrated Mexico’s 2-1 win.
Officials also decided to ban the sale and consumption of alcohol on streets, to designate special open spaces for soccer celebrations.
