A measure of the Deukmejian Administration in Sacramento is contained on Page 3 of The Times (June 10).
Item 1: “Caltrans Chief Repays State for ‘Mistake.’ ” After expressing shock and outrage regarding overtime and travel abuse re expenses, he pays back $1,200 for excessive car expenses, but he labels his expense abuse “an honest mistake.”
Item 2: “Governor Denies Insurance Chief Was Fired for Stand.” The governor denies there was any connection between former Insurance Commissioner Bruce Bunner’s advocacy of insurance industry controls and his resignation even though Commissioner Bunner appears to have told a Times reporter he was surprised by the speed with which his resignation was accepted and announced.
Item 3: “State Defends Ex-Health Chief’s Lobbying.” The Deukmejian Administration defended the ex-chief’s lobbying efforts and just coincidently sided with his stand before the present chief.
Can you believe their innocence in all these items? Can it be pure coincidence? Is there a tooth fairy--or is there just a summer Santa Claus.
