Panel Cuts ‘Star Wars’ Funds

WASHINGTON — The Senate Armed Services Committee today approved a deep reduction in President Reagan’s request for “Star Wars” spending in the latest in a series of congressional votes to reduce money for the missile defense program.
The Republican-controlled panel voted 10 to 9 to authorize $3.95 billion for Star Wars in the fiscal year starting Oct. 1. Reagan had sought a total of $5.4 billion for the program, known formally as the Strategic Defense Initiative or SDI.
