PHILADELPHIA — An ornithologist from the Academy of Natural Sciences has discovered a new species of parrot that lives in a mountain forest in Ecuador, the academy announced Thursday.
The new parrot is a relatively small, mostly green parakeet with a distinctive red crown, maroon tail and red and blue patches on the wings, the academy said. It added that Robert Ridgely, an academy ornithologist, discovered the parrot on a routine field trip in the South American country in 1980 but could not confirm the uniqueness of his find until last year.
