SUMMER JOBS CARRY A TUNE
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City is the home of a summer jobs program that has high school students hanging around on street corners--playing jazz.
Jobs of Note, now in this third year, is designed to hone the musical skills of inner-city youth, as well as to preserve the city’s jazz heritage.
About two dozen students are chosen each year by audition to participate in the program, which is underwritten by Payless Cashways Inc. Throughout the summer the students perform free in four- or five-person combos at nursing homes, in the parks and on city sidewalks.
