Karate in Long Beach

More than 2,600 men, women and children are expected to compete in the 23rd annual International Karate Championships this weekend at the Long Beach Arena. Eliminations will be Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The finals will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Water Polo Star

Playing for UC San Diego, Jenny Hohne of Whittier was named co-Most Valuable Player of the National Women’s Collegiate Water Polo Championships in Boston. Hohne is a 1983 graduate of Whittier High School.

The Lions Roared

The Hosler Junior High School Lions of Lynwood won the Koufax Division amateur baseball league in Compton and advanced to the state tournament before losing last week to the Montebello Stars, 9-3. The team, the best in the school’s history, finished 17-7 and was led by pitcher Juan Lopez and third baseman Rigo Espinoza.

Changes at LBCC

The athletic department at Long Beach City College is being restructured. The changes follow the resignation of Athletic Director Russ Jordan, who transferred to the counseling department in late spring. Former baseball Coach Bob Myers, now head of the physical education department, will spend about 60% of his time as athletic director. He will be assisted by life science instructor Carol Welsh, who will work part time as an assistant director. Former head football Coach Gary Jacobsen has been assigned to coach the men’s and women’s volleyball teams and Art Garcia, founder of Ichiban Volleyball Club, has been appointed assistant women’s volleyball coach. The staff changes will enable the school to create a position for a full-time coach of women’s cross-country and track.
