Lightning Strike Cuts Water Line for 500,000

MERIDA, Mexico — More than 500,000 residents in the eastern city of Merida have been without water since lightning struck a distribution plant Wednesday, a city official said Friday.
Merida, the capital of Yucatan state, is the largest city on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Its population has soared from fewer than 200,000 in the 1960s to more than half a million.
