The Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has presented seven members of the Culver City Fire Department with an award for saving a dog whose head was stuck inside a pipe.
The SPCA gave the award at the City Council meeting Monday. Recipients were Battalion Chief Stanley Isbell, Capt. Louis Talamantes, Engineer Kenneth Hoover and firefighters Martin Kutylo, Michael Crone, Kevin Kinnon and Kenneth Rose. The dog, called Duke the Pipe Dog, also was in attendance.
Using saws and hydraulic tools, the firemen removed the sedated German shepherd from a large concrete-lined steel pipe March 9 after the stray had been trapped for more than an hour.
