A solid majority of Americans continues to approve of President Reagan’s handling of the duties of his office, despite a substantial recent decline in consumers’ financial optimism, a Gallup Poll says. In the mid-July poll, 63% approve of Reagan’s overall job performance, while 28% disapprove and 9% are undecided. These ratings are slightly below his peak of 68% approval in May. The latest poll also found evidence that consumer optimism is starting to cool. A further weakening in consumer optimism could affect the November elections, the poll concludes.
