Newport Beach : Police Curtail Their Crackdown on Cruising

Police in Newport Beach were able to curtail their Balboa Peninsula “Cruise Control” project Saturday night because of its apparent success, a police spokesman said.
Although no tickets for cruising were handed out, officers did cite some young visitors to the peninsula for alcohol abuse, not wearing seat belts and for a variety of car equipment violations, Police Sgt. Ron Rodgers said.
Police had set up roadblocks for the first time on the weekend of July 18 on Balboa Boulevard at Palm Street to test their computer system and to crack down on young people who cruised the peninsula on weekend nights, bringing traffic almost to a standstill. The next weekend, 11 youths were cited for cruising, Rodgers said.
“In the brief time of a couple of weeks we’ve been doing this (cruising control), the people who are prone to come down and cruise are getting the point,” Rodgers said.
The department’s traffic commander and chief of police will meet later this week to decide whether to continue the roadblocks, Rodgers said.
