Two former employees of the Immigration and Naturalization Service’s Los Angeles office were convicted in U.S. District Court of accepting bribes to help Taiwanese aliens qualify for U.S. citizenship. A Los Angeles jury deliberated a day before convicting Evelyn Clark, 72, of Los Angeles and Marietta Jones, 33, of Lynwood. Assistant U.S. Atty. Laurie Lou Levenson said that Jones, a former INS desk clerk, steered citizenship applicants to Clark, an immigration examiner, who was accused of overlooking deficiencies in citizenship applications. The women each received up to $500 from each of at least seven Taiwanese aliens who went to the INS office in Los Angeles in 1980 and 1981, Levenson said. Sentencing was set for Sept. 8 before Judge William D. Keller.
