Week in Review : MAJOR EVENTS, IMAGES AND PEOPLE IN ORANGE COUNTY NEWS : CITIES : Costa Mesa Mayor Hertzog Won’t Run for Fourth Term

Times staff writers Ray Perez, Barry S. Surman and Mark Landsbaum compiled the Week in Review stories

Costa Mesa Mayor Norma Hertzog cut short her political career by announcing she will not run for a fourth term on the City Council.

Hertzog said that instead she had chosen to return to running her preschool. The mayor, 57, may have faced a tough challenge in November, spearheaded by a vocal group of homeowners who have criticized her as too pro-development.

Hertzog, however, denied the charges and said she looked at “each project individually.” She also said stepping down now was appropriate because she had reached all her goals on the council.

First elected in 1974, Hertzog was the first woman to serve on the City Council. Her colleagues twice elected her to serve as mayor.
