Konyshev Overtakes a Tired Hampsten, Wins Road Race

BOULDER, Colo. — Dmitri Konyshev of the Soviet Union won Thursday’s Golden-to-Boulder Mountain Road Race, spoiling Andy Hampsten’s hopes for a hometown victory in the Coors International bicycle race.

Hampsten, a Boulder resident, had broken off from a group of about 20 riders--including race leader Bernard Hinault and his Red Zinger teammates Greg LeMond and Steve Bauer--at mile 19, and by mile 20 was out front, alone.

For the next 62 miles he had leads of two minutes or more but was caught, exhausted, at the 82nd mile. Hampsten, who finished fourth in this year’s Tour de France as its top rookie, couldn’t keep up the pace and finished in 25th place.

Konyshev crossed the finish line at 3 hours 25 minutes after being one of the first riders around the final corner in downtown Boulder. In the field sprint down the stretch, LeMond finished second and Phil Anderson--Hampsten’s Levi’s teammate--was third.

Anderson, of Melbourne, Australia, had won the stage in 1978. He kept his standing of second overall, but LeMond, of Reno, Nev., was only two seconds back.

Hampsten said later that, “the whole break probably finished me off for the rest of the race. Plus I haven’t really been in top form for this race . . . I haven’t felt on top of it, ever.”

Hampsten said he probably would not have changed his strategy if he had to do over again.
