John A. Zaccaro, the husband of former vice presidential candidate Geraldine A. Ferraro, may face criminal charges involving the awarding of cable television franchises, New York Newsday reported. Lawyers familiar with the case told the paper perjury, contempt and bribery are among the charges under consideration against Zaccaro and Queens Administrative Judge Francis Smith. Witnesses told a grand jury that Zaccaro offered in 1981 to help a national cable television firm get a Queens franchise in exchange for a $1-million fee, but the offer was rejected, lawyers said. Zaccaro’s attorney has said he “emphatically denies any wrongdoing.”
