WASHINGTON — About 100 long-term political prisoners are expected to arrive in the United States from Cuba early next week, the State Department said today.
The group will be one of the largest to be released by Cuba since the 1980 Mariel boat lift under which 120,000 people left Cuba for the United States. Authorities said the group included officials of the former government of Fulgencio Batista, ousted by Fidel Castro in 1959.
