A deputy sheriff was relieved of duty after he was charged with embezzling more than $300 from the accounts of prisoners. A sheriff’s spokesman said Carl McCollough, 31, a member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department since 1980, was expected to surrender today on felony charges of embezzlement filed last week by the district attorney’s office. Sheriff’s spokesman Pete Fosselman said McCollough had spent his entire career as a deputy at the Hall of Justice jail in Central Los Angeles. Prisoners, he explained, are not allowed to have more than $40 in their possession at any time. McCollough’s duties included placing excess funds in special jail accounts.
