Woodbridge Still Unbeaten : Brougher’s Passing Leads Warriors Past Corona del Mar

Junior Eric Brougher threw two touchdowns passes Friday as Woodbridge High School remained undefeated by beating Corona del Mar, 24-15, in a nonleague game at Irvine High.
A crowd of 1,800 watched Brougher complete 10 of 18 attempts for 117 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown pass to David Townsend to open the scoring in the first quarter. Townsend rushed for 50 yards in 11 carries for the Warriors (4-0).
Junior Sean Woolsey rushed for 126 yards in 11 carries for the Sea Kings (1-3).
After Woodbridge went ahead early, quarterback Mitch Melbon scored on a two-yard run to cut the Warriors’ lead to 7-6 in the second quarter.
Woodbridge moved ahead, 10-6, on Keith Boothroyd’s 25-yard field goal with 43 seconds remaining in the first half.
Woolsey’s 47-yard touchdown run with 7:37 left in the third quarter put Corona del Mar ahead, 12-10, but the Sea Kings failed to make a two-point conversion.
Woodbridge regained the lead for good at 17-12 when John Rios intercepted a Melbon pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown with 3:54 remaining in the quarter.
The Sea Kings cut the lead to 17-15 on Brian Vaughan’s 26-yard field goal with 10:12 left in the game. But Woodbridge clinched the victory when Brougher hit Dax Jordan on an 11-yard scoring play with 58 seconds left.
